Damp Proofing

Damp Surveys & Treatment in Kent

Damp has several causes and each needs a different fix. Moisture can rise from the ground, push through a wall from outside or form on cold surfaces inside the home. Treating it at the source is what makes the difference, leaving drier, healthier rooms and protecting plaster, timber and decoration from further harm.

Once the cause is clear, the treatment can be a new damp-proof course for rising damp, repairs to the outside of the wall for penetrating damp, or better ventilation and mould control where condensation is the problem. Where damp has led to dry rot, affected timbers are cut out and replaced.

We give you honest advice on what we found and what we recommend, so you can weigh up the options before any work is booked. Steadfast carries out damp proofing for homeowners, landlords and commercial premises across Maidstone, Kent and South East London.

When to Call Us

Signs You Need Damp Proofing

  • Tide Marks on Walls

Staining, salts or crumbling plaster along the bottom of ground floor walls can point to rising damp.

  • Damp After Rain

Patches that grow or darken after wet weather suggest water is getting through the wall from outside.

  • Mould & Wet Windows

Mould on ceilings, corners and window reveals is usually condensation, which needs better ventilation.

  • Musty or Soft Timbers

A musty smell, cracked skirting or floorboards that give underfoot can all be early signs of dry rot.

How It Works

Our Damp Proofing Process

  1. Finding the Cause

Walls, floors and timbers are checked and moisture readings taken to tell rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation apart.

  2. Stopping the Water

The source is dealt with first, whether that is a failed damp-proof course, a defect in the outside wall or poor ventilation.

  3. Removing Damaged Material

Salt-laden plaster is stripped back and rotten timber cut out so the treatment reaches the affected area.

  4. Making Good

Walls are replastered with suitable materials, timbers replaced, and the area cleaned up ready for decorating once dry.

FAQs

Damp Proofing FAQs

How Do I Know If I Have Rising Damp or Condensation?

Rising damp tends to show as a tide mark low on the wall with salts in the plaster. Condensation shows as mould and moisture on cold surfaces, often higher up and around windows. A damp survey tells them apart, which matters because the treatments are very different.

Do I Need a New Damp-Proof Course?

Only if the survey shows the existing one has failed or is missing. Many damp problems come from outside defects or condensation, and a new damp course would not fix those.

Can Dry Rot Be Treated Without Replacing Every Timber?

Yes. Only the affected timber needs cutting out and replacing, and the surrounding masonry and timbers are treated to stop the rot spreading. The moisture source that allowed the rot to start is also dealt with, otherwise it can return.

How Long Do Walls Take to Dry Out After Damp Treatment?

Drying time depends on the wall thickness and how wet it was, and solid walls can take several months. We advise you on when it is sensible to decorate.

Do You Treat Damp in Rented Properties for Landlords?

Yes. We treat damp in rented homes and commercial premises as well as owner-occupied homes across Kent and South East London.
